This piece is titled Anthony Buteo Jamaicensis. I started off with a wet on wet, flat wash of each base color, yellow, dusty rose, and blue. Gradually as I added layers, I lifted color off the paper as there are more lighter to act as the sun. As I continued to layer on the colors more vibrantly, I blended them more to give the sky an overall tone of harmony. I painted the mountains and put on top of them plastic wrap to give them texture. Last, but certainly not least, I gave two coats of black tinted blue paint to the birds and skateboarder. The subject matter is the sunset with birds and a skateboarder flying over the mountains. In this piece, I made sure to make the colors blend but still hold their own ground. I gave them enough space to breathe, but still joined together in harmony. Its the value of the colors of the sky that I wanted to emphasis as best I could. The movement directs the eye across the page with the brush strokes but also with the direction that the flock is flying. My mom liked the sunset. She said it reminded her of the sunsets she would see when she was a little girl. She also loves birds. With a twist of my personality, adding the skateboarder into the drawing created a sense of what I think a sunset should look like!
